The original name of Monterey was Monte Rey, after the sponsor of Vizcaíno's mission and viceroy of New Spain, Don Gaspár de Zúñiga y Acevedo, Conde de Monte Rey.  Later on when the name was contracted, it was misspelled.  The "R" should have become a "rr" to preserve the pronunciation, as was correctly done with Monterrey, Mexico.
